Drawing Berlin apprentices to Brandenburg for vocational learning - Berlin residents entice for skill-building opportunities in Brandenburg

In a bid to further progress training contracts in Brandenburg, the Berlin-Brandenburg Association of Chambers of Industry and Commerce (UVB) has thrown its support behind the initiative. The move comes as Brandenburg seeks to attract apprentices from Berlin, where there are more apprentices but fewer training places.

Daniel Keller, the Economic Minister of Brandenburg (SPD), emphasised the need to overcome the mental barrier that the border often presents for young people. He made this statement before a meeting of the Brandenburg Alliance for Good Work. Keller also highlighted the importance of good mobility for the exchange of apprentices between the two regions.

Alexander Schirp, Main Managing Director of UVB, proposed the potential creation of a fixed target for the employment of migrants. He also suggested advocating for an apprentice ticket within the VBB transport association in both Berlin and Brandenburg to facilitate this mobility.

Brandenburg is aiming to set a target of 10,000 new training contracts per year from 2023 to 2025. This goal is shared by the state government, chambers, associations, and trade unions in Brandenburg.

The exchange of apprentices between Brandenburg and Berlin could only happen under certain conditions. The training location in Brandenburg must be suitable for apprentices from Berlin. In this regard, Tesla, located at the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg in Grünheide, Brandenburg, has announced plans to offer apprenticeships for trainees starting September 1, 2025, including training as an IT specialist in system integration.

DEHOGA Brandenburg member companies in the hospitality sector are also engaged in developing long-term internships and apprenticeships, particularly through collaboration with international partners, indicating openness to apprenticeship programs.

Both Brandenburg and Berlin could benefit from this exchange of apprentices. As Minister Keller aims to continue the increase in training contracts in Brandenburg, with over 10,000 contracts concluded last year, the potential for growth in Berlin through this collaboration is promising.
