Berlin's Philharmonic Orchestra resumes performances in Salzburg, with the "Ring" cycle scheduled until 2030.
The Berlin Philharmonic has announced its return to the Salzburg Easter Festival, with a spectacular multi-year project: the performance of Richard Wagner's "Ring Cycle". This grand endeavour will commence in 2026 and is scheduled to be completed by 2030.
The "Ring Cycle", consisting of four operas - "Das Rheingold", "Die Walküre", "Siegfried", and "Götterdämmerung" - will depict different continents or world regions in each opera. Kirill Petrenko, the chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, will lead this ambitious project.
The Easter Festival in Salzburg, founded by conductor Herbert von Karajan in 1967, has a history with the "Ring Cycle". It was part of the festival's early editions. Kirill Petrenko, during a press conference in Salzburg, also announced the performance of Arnold Schoenberg's opera "Moses und Aron" as an interruption in the cycle in 2028.
Kirill Serebrennikov, a Russian director known for his personal, expressive approach to art and theatre, will be directing the "Ring Cycle" production. He has already filmed scenes in Iceland for this project and describes it as a "total work of art", "community", and "boundlessness".
Serebrennikov, who lives in German exile, considers the renewed partnership with the city of Mozart as closing many circles. For Petrenko, the Berlin Philharmonic's performance of the "Ring Cycle" marks the absolute highlight of his artistic career, apart from his engagement with the Berlin Philharmonic.
The Berlin Philharmonic was previously the orchestra of the Easter Festival in Salzburg until 2012. Their return to the festival is undoubtedly an exciting prospect for music lovers worldwide. The "Ring Cycle" promises to be a spectacle that will captivate audiences for years to come.
