BetMGM penalized for illegitimate advertising practices in Ontario by AGCO

Breaking News:

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has slammed BetMGM with a hefty fine for unlawful marketing tactics in two seperate incidents, back in 2024.

These questionable practices involved shady partnerships with third-party companies, who were dispensing cold, hard cash to the public for signing up and depositing on BetMGM accounts. The AGCO considers these actions as a blatant disregard for Ontario's strict gambling regulations.

As Dr. Karin Schnarr, the CEO of the AGCO, stated, "Protecting Ontarians and ensuring responsible gambling safeguards on registered gaming sites are our top priorities."

"The AGCO keeps a close watch on all registered operators and their third-party partners to ensure they meet our high standards," Dr. Schnarr added. "We take swift action to ensure they're working honestly for the public good."

According to the AGCO, BetMGM violated the province's gambling laws at a major national trade conference, a significant blow to the province's legal standards.

The infractions were outlined in an Order of Monetary Penalty from the AGCO, detailing three specific violations.

First, on January 13th and 14th, 2024, BetMGM offered C$100 in cash to attendees at the National Franchise Show for creating new accounts and depositing C$15. In March 2024, BetMGM accepted responsibility for their affiliate "Above the Street" partaking in prohibited inducement marketing, leading to 377 new sign-ups and C$127,180 in commissions.

Second, in April, another affiliate, "Maple Leaf Marketing," employed similar methods, resulting in 94 new player sign-ups and approximately C$34,000 in commissions.

Overall, BetMGM Canada was fined $110,000 for these unlawful marketing practices. The AGCO's enforcement action is a clear indication of their commitment to maintaining compliance with Ontario's strict advertising and player protection standards in the online gambling sector.
