In September 2024, the global Christian community mourned the loss of Daniel Bourdanné, a remarkable leader who dedicated his life to the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES). Born in Malanegome, Chad, Bourdanné's journey with IFES began at the tender age of 14 when he attended his first meeting of the local IFES movement, UJC.

Bourdanné's commitment to IFES deepened during his studies at the University of Abidjan, where he felt a divine calling to serve. This calling led him to take on various roles within the organisation, including serving as the Regional Secretary for Francophone Africa for 11 years and the General Secretary for 12 years.

One of Bourdanné's most significant contributions was the formulation of the Living Stones vision for IFES. This vision prioritised prayer, Scripture engagement, and community as essential components of ministry work. This vision also led to the launch of the Breaking New Ground project in 2018, with the goal of supporting 100 new planting initiatives by 2020. Over 600 new groups have since been established across the world as a result.

Bourdanné was known for his humility and approachability, even as a global leader. He was passionate about leadership development and invested in developing staff capable of leading IFES ministry into the future. His efforts led to the creation of the Global Leadership Initiative (GLI), an 18-month mentoring program launched in 2015, which continues to produce new IFES leaders.

Augustin Ahoga, former IFES Regional Secretary for Francophone Africa, noted Bourdanné's influential vision for a Christianity that would free humanity from injustice and exploitation. Bourdanné's work extended beyond IFES, as he served on the boards of other Christian organizations in Africa, including the International Deputy Director of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization and the International Board for the Lausanne Movement.

Bourdanné's impact was felt far and wide. He embodied the gospel throughout his life, in his studies, work, and home, and allowed the gospel to orientate his ministry and shape his character. His writings on leadership, marriage, and the dangers of prosperity theology continue to inspire and guide many.

Despite the challenges he faced, such as the British visa process when moving to Oxford for his new role, Bourdanné remained steadfast in his commitment to serving God and IFES. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the organisations he strengthened. Daniel Bourdanné will be deeply missed, but his impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
