Bicycles Stranded on the Broadest Road in Wilmersdorf: Examination of Road Design Limitations

In the heart of Berlin, the lack of cycling infrastructure on the busy Konstanzer Straße in the district of Wilmersdorf has left many pedestrians and cyclists feeling exposed. This is surprising, given the examples of safe and comfortable bike paths in the same district, such as the Opernroute Nord.

The Opernroute Nord, completed in recent years, serves as a positive example of a well-designed bike path, connecting two important junctions over approximately 2.2 kilometers. This route, which is under the responsibility of the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection, and Environment, provides a safe and comfortable cycling experience.

However, the Konstanzer Straße, despite having almost continuously six lanes, does not have a bus lane or a cycling lane. This situation is considered dangerous for cyclists due to the lack of dedicated infrastructure. The official responsibility for planning and implementing a bicycle street project on Konstanzer Straße in Wilmersdorf lies in dispute between the Berlin Senate and the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office.

The division between the district and the Senate over the Kantstraße cycling lane project threatens to create a patchwork of traffic policies in City West. The Kantstraße cycling lane project has been controversial due to the narrow street and constant traffic conflicts. Despite this, the district is currently undertaking the conversion of a section of the Kantstraße's pop-up cycling lane into a permanent one, demonstrating a commitment to better cycling infrastructure.

The lack of agreement between the district and the Senate is affecting the creation of safe bicycle infrastructure on the Konstanzer Straße. The Senate Administration estimates that bicycle facilities on the Konstanzer Straße would not be feasible without a major reconstruction of the street in the short term.

Despite the challenges, it is hard to believe that it is not possible to create safe bicycle infrastructure on the Konstanzer Straße, given the example of the Opernroute Nord. The streets around Ku'damm, including the entire length of Kantstraße, also lack cycling lanes, despite ample space. It is hoped that the ongoing discussions between the district and the Senate will lead to a solution that prioritises the safety and comfort of cyclists on the Konstanzer Straße.
