Acorn Bioenergy Opens Flagship Anaerobic Digestion Site in Winchester

Acorn Bioenergy, a leading British renewable energy company, has opened a new flagship anaerobic digestion site in Winchester, southern England. The facility, named Three Maids Hill, is designed to process 83,600 tonnes of agricultural residues and local agri-waste annually.

The launch of the Three Maids Hill site was attended by representatives from the government's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, as well as other stakeholders. The event marked a significant step forward in Acorn Bioenergy's mission to build a nationwide biomethane network, with plans to construct about a dozen more plants across England and Scotland.

The Three Maids Hill site is equipped to produce more than 120 GWh of biomethane per year. This clean, renewable energy source can help reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, contributing to the UK's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

In addition to biomethane production, the Three Maids Hill site also produces high-purity green carbon dioxide for industrial uses. This carbon dioxide is a by-product of the anaerobic digestion process and can be used in various industries, such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.

The bio-fertiliser digestate produced by the Three Maids Hill site is returned to local farms to improve soil health. This organic fertiliser reduces the reliance on imported and carbon-intensive alternatives, further supporting sustainable farming practices.

Acorn Bioenergy is not only focused on the Three Maids Hill site but also on expanding its operations. The company is constructing two additional plants in the UK and building a dedicated gas injection hub. These new facilities will increase the company's annual biomethane production capacity to over 1.5 TWh, feeding into the national gas grid via four central hubs.

The Three Maids Hill site is a testament to Acorn Bioenergy's commitment to sustainable and renewable energy production. As the company continues to grow, it is poised to play a crucial role in the UK's transition to a net-zero carbon economy.
