Blood-soaked Origin Unveils a chilling narrative of maternal love
In the chilling world of "Birth/Rebirth", directed by Laura Moss, two compelling characters, dour pathologist Rose (played by Marin Ireland) and upbeat nurse Celie (Judy Reyes), navigate a morally complex landscape. This film, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, is set to arrive on Shudder later this year.
The story begins with a harrowing birth scene, but it is not long before tragedy strikes. Celie's young daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister), dies suddenly, and Celie discovers that Rose has taken Lila's corpse for an experimental treatment. Rose insists her success is due to "good science and hard work over time," not anything supernatural.
However, the act of creating life in such an unnatural way has a negative effect on both Rose and Celie. The film is a homage to Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and David Cronenberg's visceral nightmares, with notably realistic prosthetic make-up and special effects that may be unsuitable for the squeamish.
The performances in "Birth/Rebirth" are exceptional. Ireland and Reyes deliver depth and empathy to their complex characters, making the audience feel the weight of their struggles and the turmoil of their decisions.
As we look ahead, the release schedules for Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek are upcoming, along with updates on the DC Universe in film and TV, and future developments for Doctor Who. For those who seek a more introspective and thought-provoking film experience, "Birth/Rebirth" promises to be a standout choice when it streams on Shudder later this year."
