Board of Veterans Resource Center discusses operational strategies at initial gathering

The Alabama Veterans Resource Center (AVRC) Board held its first meeting on Thursday, gathered in the Alabama State Capitol's original archives room. The board, composed of leaders in Alabama's state government and the private sector, was approved by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey late last month.

Greg Reed, Chair of the board and Secretary of the Alabama Department of Workforce, expressed gratitude to board members, parties responsible for the board's creation, and Alabama's veterans. He called on all board members to raise public awareness, through social media, of the new board's existence.

The board's duties include assisting veterans in accessing federal and state benefits, career counseling and job placement services, mental health and wellness programs, education and training opportunities, and support for their spouses, dependents, and families. Reed stressed the need for AVRC to have a central office and mentioned considering Montgomery as the site for the central location.

Board members hope that the services provided by the resource center will become a "one-stop shop" for assisting Alabama's veterans in their transition to civilian life. To achieve this, they expressed hopes for partnerships with pre-existing veteran support initiatives, such as Jacksonville State University's Victory Center.

Reed also called for the board to examine how it can utilize technology to reach veterans and help them understand the services offered by AVRC. He proposed a potential board trip to MTSU's campus in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to learn more about the university's veteran support programming.

The AVRC board unanimously voted to approve the ratification of its incorporation application process, finalizing its establishment as a state entity, and the ratification of the board's bylaws. Reed committed to returning for the board's next meeting with proposals that begin to outline the proposed foundation's structure.

In addition, Reed discussed the need for an executive director of AVRC and his commitment to finding an ideal candidate for the position. Newton suggested an office on Troy University Montgomery or Alabama State University's campuses could serve as a good base of operations.

The city of Montgomery, Alabama, was discussed as a potential location for the central office of the Alabama Veterans Resource Center. The board members in attendance included various officials from Alabama's state government, private sector, and legislature.

Reed concluded the meeting by calling on the board to work together to make a difference in the lives of Alabama's veterans. The AVRC board's next meeting is planned for the afternoon of October 16.
