Book title: Unendingly ( Truly )
In a heartwarming effort to preserve the legacy of the popular radio show "To the Best of Our Knowledge" (TTBOOK), a team led by Shannon has been working tirelessly to compile an extensive collection of over 1,150 TTBOOK shows, spanning 35 years. This collection, now known as the "To the Best of Our Knowledge Special Collection," will air its final episode on Sept. 27.
The collection, which is free and permanently preserved for anyone to listen to, reflects the spirit of deep connection and curiosity that Jim Fleming, Steve Paulson, and Anne Strainchamps began with TTBOOK three decades ago. It has been a cathartic experience for Shannon, helping them move beyond sadness about the show's ending.
The TTBOOK team embarked on this project as part of an effort to preserve the legacy of TTBOOK and make all shows available for listeners. Their search led them to the basement of Vilas Communication Hall at UW-Madison, where they found physical reel-to-reel tapes for the first 11 years of the show. Additional tapes were located in UW archives across campus.
The "To the Best of Our Knowledge Special Collection" was prioritized by the archivists at the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting provided the initial funding for the project. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is currently winding down due to defunding, but the Mellon Foundation has continued the financial support for the collection.
The collection's content ranges from topics about bees, poetry, socialism, alchemy, and more. It includes interviews with notable figures such as Jane Goodall, Salman Rushdie, Alice Walker, Oliver Sacks, Jimmy Carter, David Foster Wallace, Toni Morrison, Stephen Sondheim, Margaret Atwood, E.O. Wilson, and Yo-Yo Ma.
Shannon, a team member, expressed gratitude for the partners at the American Archive of Public Broadcasting. They believe that the work at TTBOOK is not only theirs, but belongs to everyone in the future. The "To the Best of Our Knowledge Special Collection" has been launched on the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, ensuring that the show's rich history and insightful discussions will continue to inspire and educate listeners for years to come.
