Border Policies Controversy: Preventing Family Divisions, Maintaining Parent-Child Union at Borders is Imperative

In recent times, the US-Mexico border crisis has served as a stark reminder of the devastating effects forced migration can have on children. The practice of separating families during this crisis, under the current US administration's zero-tolerance immigration policy, resulted in almost 2,654 children being separated from their families.

This heart-wrenching situation has been a source of concern for Dr. Asma Fazal, a pediatrician and mother. The American Academy of Pediatrics shares her sentiment, urging that children should not be separated from their parent or primary caregiver unless they are at risk of harm.

Research shows that displacement and family separation during childhood can cause long-term injury to the developing brain and harm general health. Children in such situations may become increasingly susceptible to abuse, exploitation, and physical and mental health problems.

Conflicts, too, have a profound impact on children's health and wellbeing. Modern-day conflicts are often domestic, putting children at risk in their own homes and streets. Combat can occur in these areas, causing extreme ruthlessness and personal violence. Children in conflict zones are also susceptible to communicable diseases.

In addition, conflicts have a negative impact on communities, social relations, and the ability of families to care for children. Children face brutal violations of their human rights during these times.

However, there have been instances of hope. In 2021, Germany and Poland kept their borders open and established special reception areas for refugee children from conflict zones, particularly in response to the large influx of displaced people from Ukraine and other crisis regions. Within weeks, thousands of parents were united with their children.

Despite these efforts, the issue of offering sanctuary to those fleeing conflicts remains a global human rights concern. As of now, the parents of 545 children cannot be found. It is crucial that we continue to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of these vulnerable children.
