Borlefzen's lake has been emptied out
The Borlefzen bathing lake, a significant bathing site in Vlotho, Germany, has reopened to the public following the removal of blue-green algae and an increase in the oxygen content of the lake water. The swimming lake, which is listed as an EU bathing lake, was closed two weeks prior due to the detection of blue-green algae.
To combat the algae, a "mowing boat" was used to remove the algae from the lake, and aeration pumps were employed to increase the oxygen levels in the water. The district health department, responsible for the monthly water quality monitoring of the lake, has reported that the latest water samples show no excess of limit values, and the blue-green algae have been successfully removed.
The low water level and stagnant water due to the low inflow of the swimming lake, as well as high temperatures, may have contributed to the development of blue-green algae. However, with the implementation of the aforementioned measures, the water quality has improved, and the bathing ban was lifted on September 3, 2025.
It is worth noting that bathing in water contaminated with blue-green algae can cause skin irritation, redness, or rashes for swimmers. Despite the closure of the swimming lake, the camping site with all other offers remained open during the closure.
The Borlefzen swimming lake, subject to the EU Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EG) due to its size and high number of bathers, is now open to the public once again. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy their time at the lake responsibly and to report any signs of blue-green algae should they arise.
