In the latest education system ranking, Brandenburg found itself in the second-to-last position, following a consistent trend of poor performance over the past few years. According to the "Education Monitor 2025" of the pro-business Initiative New Social Market Economy (INSM), Brandenburg ranked alongside North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and Bremen.

The study, which evaluates the education systems of 16 German states using 98 indicators based on educational economic criteria, highlights the need for improvement in several key areas. These include digitization, computer science offerings, teaching hours, and the care ratio (number of students per teacher).

The study also indicates a deterioration in important areas such as student performance, school dropout rates, and educational justice (strong link between social origin and educational success). Saxony has been leading the ranking for several years, with Bavaria following closely behind.

Despite these challenges, Brandenburg showed a promising result in terms of internationalization. In 2023, almost all vocational students in Brandenburg (97%) were taught foreign languages, the second-best result among the federal states.

In 2022, Brandenburg was in the same second-to-last position as in the current ranking. Hamburg is the third-ranked state, while Berlin is in 11th place.

It is important to note that the poor performance of Brandenburg in the 2025 education performance measurement is attributed to the current state government of Brandenburg, which oversees the education policy and school system in the state of Brandenburg, Germany.

The findings of this study serve as a call to action for the Brandenburg government to address these issues and work towards improving the education system for the betterment of its students and the state as a whole.
