Milwaukee Brewers Extend Lead in NL Central, Overpower Pittsburgh Pirates

In a closely contested battle, the Milwaukee Brewers managed to secure a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, extending their lead in the NL Central division.

William Cotreras continued his impressive form, catching 1,000 innings in back-to-back seasons for the Brewers. This exclusive club, which also includes Darrell Porter, B.J. Surhoff, Jason Kendall, and Jonathan Lucroy, now has an additional member.

Brandon Woodruff, the Brewers' star pitcher, delivered a strong performance, pitching six scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits, struck out eight, and walked none in his outing. This was Woodruff's first scoreless start since his previous two, where he allowed five earned runs each.

The offence was kick-started by William Cotreras, who singled before Jake Bauers' home run in the 4th inning. Bauers' two-run homer broke a scoreless tie and provided the Brewers with the momentum they needed.

Sal Frelick went 2 for 4 for the Brewers, raising his batting average to .299. The rookie Jackson Chourio also contributed with a home run in the 8th inning, doubling the Brewers' advantage.

On the other side, the Pirates struggled to find their rhythm. Jared Triolo and Bryan Reynolds each had two hits, but they failed to capitalise on their opportunities. The Pirates had runners on first and second in the 7th inning while trailing 2-0, but failed to score.

Mitch Keller, the Pirates' starting pitcher, gave up two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings and lost for the fourth time in his last five starts. Rob Zastryzny came in to relieve Keller and managed to induce a foul out to end the 7th inning with runners on base.

The Pirates were unable to avoid being shut out until the 9th inning, when Oneil Cruz hit an RBI groundout. However, it was not enough to turn the tide of the game.

Looking ahead, the Brewers will be led by Jacob Misiorowski (4-2, 4.50 ERA) on Sunday, while the Pirates are yet to announce their starter. The rookie Bubba Chandler is expected to start for the Pirates.

With 19 games remaining, the Brewers currently lead the NL Central by 6 1/2 games over the Chicago Cubs. The Brewers' consistent performance and strong pitching have put them in a commanding position, but they will need to maintain their focus to secure a playoff spot.
