In a surprising turn of events, Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, has stepped down from her positions following an error in the payment of stamp duty on a property purchase.

The controversy began when it was revealed that Rayner had underpaid stamp duty during the purchase of her flat in Hove. In response, she admitted to the error and has since faced fines of up to twelve thousand pounds.

In a handwritten letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Rayner took full responsibility for the error and expressed her regret for the impact it has had on her family. Starmer acknowledged Rayner's decision to refer herself to the independent adviser on ministerial standards and agreed with her course of action.

Starmer also defended Rayner during a weekly Prime Minister Question Time in parliament, stating that the error was due to legal advice that did not properly account for her complex situation involving a trust for her son with special educational needs.

In her resignation letter, Rayner expressed her sadness that her time as deputy prime minister, secretary of state, and deputy leader of the Labour Party ended in this manner. Starmer thanked Rayner for informing him of her decision to resign from the government.

Following Rayner's resignation, Starmer has replaced her as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister with former Foreign Secretary David Lammy. Yvette Cooper has taken on the role of Foreign Secretary.

Starmer expressed his sadness at Rayner's resignation, stating that she had been a valuable member of his government and had made significant contributions to various issues. He wished her well in her future endeavours.

Rayner, for her part, has referred herself to the house ethics committee and has stated that it was never her intention to do anything other than pay the right amount of tax. She has also expressed her intention to pay back the unpaid tax as soon as possible.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in public life, and the need for politicians to act with integrity at all times.
