Keir Starmer's 2024 Cabinet Reshuffle: Shabana Mahmood Becomes UK's New Interior Minister

In a significant shake-up of his cabinet, Labour leader Keir Starmer undertook a major reshuffle in July 2024. The reshuffle was deeper than anticipated, following the resignation of Angela Rayner as deputy premier.

Rayner's departure was forced due to her breach of the ministerial code regarding tax affairs, as ruled by the independent adviser. Her resignation marked a low point for Starmer, but the reshuffle was intended to restore his authority.

One of the most notable appointments was Shabana Mahmood, a British lawmaker of Pakistani origin, who was named the UK's new interior minister on Friday, 2024. Mahmood, who has been an MP since 2010, previously served as justice minister before taking charge of the Home Office.

Mahmood, who has held several shadow portfolios, declined to serve in Jeremy Corbyn's team when he was party leader. She is considered the most senior Muslim in UK politics and has been a prominent figure in the Labour Party.

David Lammy was promoted to deputy prime minister and justice secretary in the reshuffle. Yvette Cooper, who moved from Home Secretary to Foreign Secretary, was another key appointment. The three new appointments—Yvette Cooper, David Lammy, and Mahmood—were considered "sound" but not overly exciting.

Angela Rayner, who was referred to as a "big beast" by a Labour lawmaker, had been a significant figure in the party. Her resignation marked a turning point in Starmer's tenure as leader, and the cabinet reshuffle was a step towards reestablishing his authority.
