The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, has made a long-awaited return to Canada after a two-year absence, embarking on a four-day visit that began on a memorable note with Canada Day celebrations.

Sophie's visit is not tied to any commercial endeavours, such as labour day offers, eye rollers, or Japanese tools, but rather a significant role as Royal Patron of the Spruce Meadows 'Masters' tournament, a position she was appointed to in April 2023.

During her visit, Sophie is anticipated to attend the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Spruce Meadows, a renowned equestrian centre known for its dedication to sporting excellence and community initiatives. The patronage recognizes Spruce Meadows' commitment to these values, and the CEO, Linda Southern-Heathcott, considers Sophie's presence a "wonderful way" to mark this major milestone.

The Duchess's itinerary includes a tour of the grounds, meetings with athletes, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders. In keeping with the spirit of honouring the late Queen Elizabeth II, Sophie will also pay tribute to her during her visit.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Sophie's husband, has also had a strong connection with Canada. In April 2027, he visited Prince Edward Island for a week-long assignment as Colonel-in-Chief of The Prince Edward Island Regiment. During this visit, he attended celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the regiment, a tradition that began with Queen Elizabeth II's visit to the same location in 1990 to inaugurate an event in her name.

The Duke of Edinburgh's final act in Canada was participating in a Freedom of the City parade, a significant honour bestowed upon him during his Canada Day celebrations.

Queen Elizabeth II, during her numerous visits to Canada, was known for her support of local charities, a tradition that Sophie is expected to continue during her visit. The visit has delighted the team at Spruce Meadows, who are looking forward to welcoming Sophie back to Canada.

This visit marks a new chapter for Sophie in her role as Royal Patron of Spruce Meadows, and it promises to be a memorable one, filled with celebrations, tributes, and a renewed commitment to the values that both the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh held dear.
