Brooket Henderson clinches victory at the tournament in Canada
In a thrilling finale at the CPKC Canadian Women's Open 2023, Brooke Henderson clinched her second national championship, making her the top Canadian professional golfer with this impressive victory.
The 27-year-old Smiths Falls native triumphed over a strong field, including Minjee Lee who shot a commendable 68 (-3) in the final round. Henderson's own performance was equally impressive, as she carded a 67 (-4) in the final round, securing her win by a single stroke.
This victory marks Henderson's 14th title on the LPGA Tour, a testament to her consistent performance and dedication to the sport. Her first win at the CPKC Canadian Women's Open was in 2018, and this triumph marks her second win at the prestigious tournament.
Henderson's success did not go unnoticed, as the final pairing drew a massive crowd eager to witness history in the making. Her victory also qualifies her for the CME Group Tour Championship, concluding the season in late November, and earns her a spot on the international team for the Hanwha LIFEPLUS International Crown later this October.
The win is expected to boost Henderson's LPGA ranking, likely propelling her to 26th on the tour. However, her journey to this victory was not without challenges. During her drought, Henderson dropped to 53rd in the Race to CME Globe standings and 58th in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings.
Lorie Kane, a four-time LPGA tour champion and member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, was present at both of Henderson's victories at the women's Omnium. Kane believes that Henderson's successes have not received enough credit, particularly her first 13 wins. She hopes that Canadians will give Henderson more recognition for her achievements.
With this triumph, Henderson becomes the first Canadian to win the national championship since Jocelye Bourassa in 1973. The victory also reinforces her status as Canada's top female golfer and brings her closer to Canadian records for domestic wins.
In addition, Henderson's win secures her a likely Ryder Cup appearance in September at Bethpage Black, a significant milestone in her career. Fifteen-year-old Canadian Aphrodite Deng also made headlines, tying for 20th place in the tournament, being the top amateur.
Brooke Henderson's victory at the CPKC Canadian Women's Open 2023 not only solidifies her position as Canada's top female golfer but also sets the stage for potential international successes in the future.
