Brothers from Scotland successfully row across the Pacific Ocean in 139 days, expressing a craving for pizza and beer upon reaching land
The Maclean brothers, Ewan, Jamie, and Lachlan, have made history by completing the fastest unsupported non-stop row across the Pacific Ocean. Their boat, named Rose Emily, is believed to be the fastest and lightest ocean rowing boat ever built, created in collaboration with ocean rowing legend Mark Slats.
The brothers, who are the first trio of brothers to row any ocean together and the youngest and fastest trio to cross from the Canary Islands to Antigua, reached their destination after four-and-a-half months of continuous rowing. Upon arriving, they celebrated by playing the bagpipes and waving Scottish, Australian, and UK flags.
The Pacific challenge aimed to raise awareness and funding to build boreholes for the whole of the Ambohimanarina municipality in Madagascar, where currently only 14% of the population has access to safe, clean drinking water. The Maclean brothers' mission is to provide clean water for over 40,000 people in Madagascar.
The last few weeks of their journey were particularly challenging, with repeated storms and expectations being crushed. One of the storms resulted in Lachlan being swept overboard by a towering wave during a night shift. However, Ewan managed to rescue his brother, demonstrating the brothers' unwavering determination.
Despite these challenges, the Maclean brothers surpassed the previous time record crossing set by Russian Fedor Konyukhov in 2014. They have so far raised £850,859 ($1.15 million) of their £1 million ($1.35 million) target for their latest ocean crossing.
The Maclean family founded the organization "Water for Madagascar" to collect donations for clean drinking water projects in Madagascar. The Maclean brothers' family-run, non-profit organization, The Maclean Foundation, works to secure clean water for communities through partnering with organizations in Madagascar to build boreholes.
In 2020, the Maclean brothers made the bold decision to row across the Atlantic Ocean. They completed the 3,000-mile Atlantic Ocean row in just 35 days, setting three world records. Now, they have conquered the Pacific Ocean, proving that their spirit of adventure and dedication to their cause remains unwavering.
The Maclean brothers' ocean crossing is not just a feat of endurance and skill; it is a testament to their commitment to making a difference in the world. Their journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of clean water and the lengths people will go to ensure that others have access to this basic human right.
