Browser Debate: Comet and Truth Social, Together with Exploring Methods to Combat Hallucinations - Insights from Perplexity's Communications Lead

In the dynamic world of technology, Perplexity, a leading AI brand, is causing a stir with its latest innovations.

Perplexity's AI-powered internet browser, known as Comet, has become the new browser of choice for Truth Social, the social media platform founded by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite Truth Social not publicly endorsing Perplexity's services, the AI brand's API is being utilised on the platform.

The Comet browser, still in its early stages and being gradually rolled out to users, is designed to compete on a larger scale, aiming to be a full-blown browser. It's an AI agent, capable of performing tasks such as booking restaurants, filling out forms, and ordering products. Perplexity's mission with Comet is to champion curiosity and help people ask more questions of the world.

However, Perplexity's journey hasn't been without controversy. The brand has been accused by Cloudflare of evading a website's no-crawl rulings. Cloudflare claims that Perplexity is accessing websites without permission, a claim that Perplexity disputes. In a lengthy blog post, Perplexity has addressed this accusation, stating that Cloudflare confused Perplexity with unrelated traffic from BrowserBase, a third-party cloud browser service.

Perplexity is also making waves in the search engine market, aiming to compete with tech giant Google. In a bold move, Perplexity has announced its intention to purchase Google Chrome for $34.5 billion. This decision is reportedly driven by Google being on the receiving end of a DOJ antitrust case. Potential investors supporting this purchase include external investors who have already committed to financing the deal, though specific names are not disclosed.

Competitors or co-investors mentioned in the deal could be OpenAI, Yahoo, or investment funds. Perplexity's AI crawls the search pages of the internet, providing responses using articles, Reddit forums, and blog posts.

Despite early reports of the new tool criticising its effectiveness, Perplexity's core technology prioritizes accuracy, viewing hallucinations as bugs rather than features. In this competitive space, where ChatGPT and Gemini dominate, Perplexity has found a somewhat niche corner of AI to serve in.

As Perplexity continues to grow and innovate, it remains to be seen how it will navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead. One thing is certain: the tech world is watching with bated breath.
