Bryan Ruiz candidly discloses the backstory of his move to Fulham, admitting initial hesitation but expressing no subsequent remorse
Bryan Ruiz, a creative and classy midfielder, joined English club Fulham in 2011 under the guidance of former Ajax manager Martin Jol. Ruiz, who had previously shone in the Eredivisie, was seen as a valuable addition to Fulham's squad, which included stars like Dimitar Berbatov, Mousa Dembele, and John Arne Riise.
During his four seasons at Fulham, Ruiz netted 13 goals in 108 appearances. However, his tenure at the club was marked by struggles with consistency and a series of managerial changes that affected his career.
In December 2013, Martin Jol was replaced by Rene Meulensteen as Fulham's manager. Ruiz found himself on the sidelines, playing only three minutes in the first two games under the new manager. This, coupled with Fulham's ongoing struggle against relegation, led Ruiz to seek playing time to prepare for the World Cup. As a result, he went on loan to PSV Eindhoven for six months.
Ruiz felt confident about his move to Fulham because the manager knew him from the Eredivisie and was impressed by Fulham's facilities. However, his Fulham career was affected by the club cycling through managers following Jol's departure in 2013.
Despite his struggles at Fulham, Ruiz's dream was to play in La Liga. An offer from Sevilla came his way, but it did not meet Twente's requirements. After his time at Fulham, Ruiz signed with Sporting CP in 2020.
Unfortunately for Fulham, the change in management did not help the team's performance, and they were relegated to the Championship during the 2013/14 season. Ruiz, however, felt it was a shame that a team with such a strong squad was fighting relegation.
In retrospect, Ruiz's loan to PSV Eindhoven was a strategic move to secure playing time and prepare for the World Cup. Despite the ups and downs of his Fulham career, Ruiz remained a talented and classy player, leaving a lasting impression on the club and its fans.
