Bryce Underwood crumbles as Michigan, ranked 15th, experiences a 24-13 defeat against the 18th-ranked Oklahoma team.
In a closely contested match-up between two of college football's blue-blood programs, the Oklahoma Sooners emerged victorious over No. 15 Michigan with a final score of 24-13. This was the second meeting between the two teams, and while Michigan holds the upper hand in total wins, Oklahoma has a remarkable record of victories since World War II.
The Sooners struggled with running the ball for much of the game, but John Mateer, the transfer quarterback from Washington State, managed to keep them in the game. In a record-breaking debut in a major game, Mateer passed for 270 yards and rushed for 74, scoring two touchdowns and one touchdown pass. His performance has drawn comparisons to notable Oklahoma transfer quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts.
Michigan's freshman quarterback, Bryce Underwood, played in a hostile environment for the first time and seemed to struggle under the pressure. He completed 9 of 24 passes for 142 yards, and the Wolverines did not show much trust in him during the game.
Oklahoma's defense held Michigan to 288 total yards, and they managed to control the clock in the fourth quarter, culminating in a 16-play, 78-yard drive that resulted in a short field goal by Tate Sandell.
Deion Burks caught seven passes for 101 yards, and Jaren Kanak added five catches for 69 yards for the Sooners. Justice Haynes ran for 125 yards for Michigan, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide in their favour.
Looking ahead, Oklahoma will visit Temple on Saturday, while Michigan will host Central Michigan. With their impressive performance against a top-ranked team, the Sooners are expected to move up in the next AP Top 25 poll.
