BSR Initiates 2025 Cleanliness Drive: Emphasis on Waste Reduction Strategy
Berlin, August 2025 — In a bid to promote waste avoidance and responsible disposal, the Berlin Senate (Senat) has launched a city-wide cleanliness campaign. The campaign, titled "Cleanliness only works together," aims to encourage individual responsibility, education, and expanded waste disposal options.
Environment Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) and BSR's CEO Stephanie Otto presented the campaign on August 4, 2025. The initiative features colorful illustrations of everyday waste items, such as to-go packaging, cigarette butts, and beverage cups, which have proven to be persistent challenges in public spaces.
The campaign's motto is a call to action, emphasising the collective responsibility of society in maintaining a clean cityscape. BSR, Berlin's waste management company, is playing a significant role in the initiative, operating around 27,000 public paper bins, including large-volume containers at heavily frequented locations.
However, the problem of illegal dumping persists. In 2024, BSR removed approximately 54,000 cubic meters of illegal dumping waste throughout Berlin, an increase compared to the previous year. The costs of removing this waste amounted to approximately 10.3 million euros in 2024.
To combat this issue, the Berlin Senate is introducing stronger penalties. As of August 2025, fines for repeated violations of waste disposal regulations will be significantly increased. A stricter penalty catalog will be introduced shortly to deal with repeated offenses, particularly focusing on commercial offenders.
Public order office controls are also being intensified, and the increase in mobile food offerings has exacerbated the problem of littering. In response, the campaign encourages regular clean-up actions and information events, such as those organised as part of the #MitteMachtSauber campaign.
The District Office of Mitte is actively participating in the cleanliness campaign under the label #MitteMakesClean. Over 16 neighborhood days were held in the first half of 2025, six more than the previous year. During these events, over 8,200 people participated, and a total of 124 tons of bulky waste were collected.
The location at Triftstraße corner Tegelerstraße was particularly well-attended, with over 1,000 participants. Disposal options for bulky waste are also being expanded to facilitate responsible disposal.
BSR's current campaign represents a three-pronged approach: education, offers, and enforcement. The goal is to contribute to a clean cityscape in the long term. The campaign motifs appear on paper bins, BSR vehicles, and social media, serving as a constant reminder of the importance of waste avoidance and responsible disposal.
The campaign is a testament to the collective effort required to maintain a clean and sustainable city. By working together, Berlin hopes to overcome the challenges posed by waste management and create a cleaner, greener city for all.
