Buccaneers release Shilo Sanders following punch incident during preseason; Sanders considers a career change due to the imposed fine and resulting team dismissal.
Shilo Sanders, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player, was released from the team on August 24, 2025, less than a day after being ejected from the Buccaneers' preseason finale. Despite this setback, Sanders remains hopeful about his future.
Sanders, who started his college career as a three-star signee at South Carolina, transferred to Jackson State before joining the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent. During his time with the team, he competed in the fall camp and preseason in a deep secondary, finishing third on the team in tackles in 2024 despite missing three games due to injury.
In 2023, Sanders led Colorado in tackles as a junior. However, his NFL career took a turn for the worse during the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills, when he was ejected for throwing a punch. Sanders was fined $4,669 for the incident.
Despite the ejection and the subsequent release, Sanders remains optimistic about his future. He stated on Instagram that he considers his ejection from the Buccaneers as part of his story to grow and do bigger and better things. Sanders is open to the possibility of returning to the NFL, joining another team, or even pursuing a career in music, modeling, or acting.
Sanders is grateful for the love and support shown to him by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the city, and his teammates. He expressed his thanks on social media, stating that he is thankful for the opportunity to have played for the team and for the support he received during his time there.
Sanders' representatives are hoping he will be claimed on waivers, giving him another chance to continue his NFL career. Regardless of where his career path leads, Sanders is determined to make the most of the opportunities that come his way.
