Building Company Cubby Construction Advocates for Equality
Cubby Construction, a renowned independent construction company based in Carlisle, is making strides in promoting gender equality within the industry. Founded in 1968, the company specialises in construction, civil engineering, joinery manufacture and installation, and sustainable housing.
Two years ago, Louise Blaen joined Cubby Construction as a CAD Designer, returning to work after a career break to raise her children. Louise's role at the company involves designing everything from bespoke furniture to kitchens to timber studs for homes at Cubby Joinery.
This year, the theme of International Women's Day is #EachforEqual, which encourages a more gender-equal world and more opportunities in the workplace, particularly in more male-dominated industries. Louise's story is a testament to this, as she enjoys the design side of her work and finds satisfaction in seeing her ideas come to life.
Tommy Cubby, the managing director of Cubby Construction, is committed to changing the perception of girls working in the construction sector. He wants to ensure that it becomes the norm for women to pursue careers in this industry. In line with this, Cubby Construction has formed a partnership with Carlisle Youth Zone to encourage future generations, regardless of gender, to achieve whatever they want.
Recently, a project at Cubby Construction involved young people building 85 bird boxes based on a design produced by Louise Blaen and the team. This project not only showcases the company's commitment to fostering talent but also highlights the importance of gender equality in the workplace.
One example of Cubby Construction's dedication to gender equality can be seen in the Kingmoor Cup, a local competition. This year, a young boy who formed a team with four ladies from Cubby Construction made a comment that "We'll never win on a girls' team." However, the Cubby women went on to win the competition, and Louise shared the story with her children to reinforce the idea that gender is no barrier to determination or success.
Tommy Cubby's team at Cubby Construction includes several women in key roles, such as Quantity Surveyors Samantha Gibson, Sarah Million, and Laura Vandale, CAD and workshop coordinator Maxine Kirkpatrick, workshop joiner Libby, and Chief Engineer Consultant Chetna Reay. Cubby Construction strives to create opportunities for everyone to thrive according to ability and to push the boundaries.
As we celebrate International Women's Day today (Sunday 8 March), Cubby Construction serves as a shining example of a company that is actively working towards a more gender-equal world in the construction sector.
