Buried Caverns Potentially Discovered Below Giza's Pyramids
In the heart of Egypt's ancient history, a modern-day mystery unfolds. British explorer Andrew Collins claims to have discovered an extensive system of natural caves and man-made chambers beneath the Giza pyramid field.
According to Collins, the system includes passages stretching for several hundred yards with at least four large chambers. He located the entrance to this hidden complex in an unrecorded tomb west of the Great Pyramid.
The existence of underground chambers and water tunnels beneath several pyramids at Giza, including the Great Pyramid, has been previously reported. Ancient Egyptian texts are said to allude to a subterranean world near the pyramids, with Giza known as "Rostau" or "mouth of the passages."
However, many claims about vast hidden complexes remain unverified or controversial within mainstream Egyptology. Egypt's chief archaeologist Zahi Hawass has dismissed Collins' claims about the extensive cave system beneath the Giza pyramid field, stating that "There are no new discoveries to be made at Giza. We know everything about the plateau."
Andrew Collins argues that there are no modern records of the cave system he claims to have discovered. He located the entrance to the hidden complex based on clues from 19th-century explorer accounts. British consul Henry Salt, in memoirs from 1817, allegedly explored underground "catacombs" at Giza with Italian explorer Giovanni Caviglia.
The alleged system, as claimed by Collins, houses a delicate ecosystem, including bat colonies and a potentially new species of venomous spider. Further archaeological investigation would be needed to confirm or refute Collins' specific assertions about an extensive "lost underworld."
It's important to note that while some underground structures have been documented at Giza, many claims about extensive hidden complexes remain unverified or controversial. The Great Pyramid itself has a complex internal tunnel system with multiple passages, adding to the intrigue surrounding the possible existence of these extensive underground chambers.
As the exploration continues, the mystery of what lies beneath the Giza pyramids remains a captivating enigma, inviting further research and debate in the field of archaeology.
