Bus manufacturer New Flyer to deliver up to 132 vehicles for Suffolk County's public transportation system.
In a significant move towards modernizing public transportation, New Flyer has been awarded a contract by Suffolk County Transit to supply up to 132 buses over the next five years. The order, which was added to New Flyer's backlog in Q1 2025, consists of a mix of hybrid-electric and battery-electric bus models.
The contract includes 92 Xcelsior® hybrid-electric 35-foot buses and 40 Xcelsior CHARGE NGTM battery-electric 40-foot buses. This shared operation, made possible by New Flyer's common Xcelsior platform, allows agencies to operate hybrid and battery-electric buses with shared parts, tools, and training. This not only delivers real operational savings but also maintains consistent, high-quality performance.
The new buses, which will be delivered over the next five years, are expected to enhance service reliability for passengers across the county. Long-term operating efficiency is anticipated to be improved, providing a better experience for passengers. Passenger comfort is also anticipated to be improved with the addition of the new buses.
The Xcelsior platform, used in the new buses, enables agencies to operate both hybrid-electric and battery-electric buses. This flexibility underscores the value of New Flyer's platform's dependability. The new vehicles will join Suffolk County Transit's existing fleet of 73 New Flyer Xcelsior® hybrid-electric 35-foot buses.
This contract underscores the value of New Flyer's platform's flexibility and dependability. The company awarded the delivery contract for up to 132 buses by Suffolk County Transit in 2025 is New Flyer. The new buses are expected to play a crucial role in improving public transportation in Suffolk County, delivering both operational savings and enhanced service for passengers.
