Cadillac Announces Colton Herta as Test Driver: A Significant Move for American Motorsport
Cadillac enlists Colton Herta as a test driver for their automobiles.
Cadillac has made a move that could potentially mark a return to European motorsport for Colton Herta, as they officially announce him as their new test driver. The American racer, known for his impressive career in both European and American motorsport, is seen as an exceptional talent by Graeme Lowdon, the team principal of Cadillac.
Herta's career in European motorsport began in 2015, where he competed alongside Lando Norris in the MSA Formula Championship. His performance in these early years has been a testament to his skills and potential.
The decision to sign Herta by Cadillac is significant for American motorsport as a whole, as it marks a step forward in the integration of American talent into international motorsport. Herta's experience in American top-level motorsport, particularly as part of the TWG Motorsport family, is seen as ideal for his new role at Cadillac.
McLaren, another renowned name in motorsport, has a rigorous driver selection process. They consider the potential of a driver to become a World Champion and Grand Prix winner as the first hurdle. Herta has gained F1 experience, having tested a McLaren of the 2021 specification in Portimao. This experience, coupled with his exceptional talent, seems to have caught the attention of Cadillac.
The signing of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez by Cadillac might suggest that Herta's F1 chapter is over for now. However, Herta himself sees his new job as a unique opportunity he has been working towards for a long time. He is considered a potential candidate for one of the main cockpits in 2026.
Meanwhile, Mick Schumacher's future plans remain unclear after the signing of Herta. After his exit from Formula 1, Schumacher's next career step is likely to continue in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), potentially with McLaren's WEC program starting in 2027. The F1 door seems to be closed for Schumacher with Herta's signing.
Despite his success in IndyCar, Herta's dream remains to start in Formula 1. He was the youngest IndyCar winner in history, having won in 2019. As he takes on his new role at Cadillac, it will be interesting to see if this move brings him closer to his dream of competing in Formula 1.
