Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark Out for Rest of 2022 WNBA Season
The Indiana Fever's season has taken a significant turn with the announcement that star player Caitlin Clark will miss the rest of the 2022 WNBA season due to a right groin injury.
Clark, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, sustained the injury late in a July 15 game against the Connecticut Sun. In a statement, Clark expressed her disappointment but also conveyed her gratitude to those who supported her during her recovery.
"I spent hours in the gym every day with the singular goal of getting back out there," Clark said.
The injury marks a new development in Clark's career, as she had never missed a game prior to this season. This is also the first time she has had to deal with multiple injuries, having also suffered from issues with her left quad and left groin.
Amber Cox, the Fever's COO and GM, stated that Clark has worked hard to recover but time is not on their side. Cox also emphasised that Clark's long-term health and well-being remains their top priority.
The Fever have already lost key players due to injuries, including fellow guards Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald, and Sophie Cunningham, and forward Chloe Bibby. Despite these setbacks, the team is aiming to claim a spot in the 2022 WNBA playoffs.
Coach Stephanie White stated that Clark hasn't done much contact work yet, but the young star is looking forward to returning at full strength for the 2026 WNBA season.
Clark's absence from the Fever has not hindered the growth of women's basketball, as the league had record attendance this season. The Fever are currently in eighth place in the WNBA standings, 1 1/2 games in front of Los Angeles with three games to play.
In her second season in the WNBA, Clark averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in 13 games. Despite her absence, the Fever will rely on their remaining players to continue their push towards the playoffs.
Clark also thanked the fans for their support during this difficult time, stating that their support brought her joy and perspective. The Fever and their fans will eagerly await Clark's return to the court in the future.
