Caleres appoints a new leader for Human Resources
Caleres, the footwear and accessories company behind popular brands such as Famous Footwear, Sam Edelman, Allen Edmonds, and the newly acquired Stuart Weitzman business, has announced a significant change in its leadership team.
Kathleen Welter, who was most recently vice president of human resources for environmental consulting firm Woodard & Curran, has been appointed as the new chief human resources officer at Caleres. She will report directly to Caleres CEO and President Jay Schmidt and will be based in St. Louis.
Welter's responsibilities will encompass a wide range of areas, including recruitment, talent management, training, culture, compensation, benefits, and labor law compliance. In her new role, she will oversee human resources for Caleres' entire portfolio of brands.
The appointment comes as Doug Koch, who was previously the chief human resources officer at Caleres, steps down from his position. Koch will stay with the company for a 30-day transition period to ensure a smooth handover.
In a move to enhance its customer offerings, Caleres has also entered into a partnership with Cash App Afterpay. This partnership allows customers to buy products from Famous Footwear, Sam Edelman, Allen Edmonds, Naturalizer, Vionic, Bzees, Circus NY, Dr. Scholls, Franco Sarto, Lifestride, Ryka, and ShoeBank in four equal payments or with monthly payments.
The acquisition of the Stuart Weitzman business by Caleres, announced earlier this month, marks a significant expansion for the company. Caleres' Q1 sales were $614.2 million, down 6.8% year over year. However, the company is set to report its Q2 earnings on Sept. 4.
Interestingly, Welter is returning to Caleres after spending time at Woodard & Curran. She previously spent a decade at Caleres as a director of talent management and vice president of talent strategy and leadership continuity.
It's worth noting that the date of the release of Caleres' Q2 earnings report cancellation was on August 10, 2023. This cancellation suggests that Caleres may have decided to provide a more comprehensive report, possibly including the impact of the Stuart Weitzman acquisition, at a later date.
This appointment and the strategic partnership with Cash App Afterpay are indicative of Caleres' commitment to innovation and growth in the footwear and accessories industry. As Welter takes on her new role, she will play a crucial part in shaping the company's future.
