Wilmot Cancer Institute Awaits NCI Designation Decision

The Wilmot Cancer Institute at the University of Rochester Medical Center has completed a virtual site visit with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in a bid to secure NCI designation. This prestigious recognition would make Wilmot one of the 72 elite cancer centers in the United States.

Thirty team members, including the executive committee, research program and shared resource leaders, assistant directors, and the administrative team, participated in the six-hour visit. The virtual reviewers from the NCI grilled the team on various aspects of Wilmot, such as institutional commitment, cancer focus, and transdisciplinary collaboration.

The Wilmot team has spent countless hours preparing for this visit, revitalizing its footprint to meet the strict NCI standards. The revitalization efforts have resulted in a more robust Community Outreach and Engagement office, a stronger cancer research training program, and enhanced administration and overall organizational capabilities.

The institute has also enrolled more patients in clinical trials, an essential requirement for NCI designation. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, regional faculty and staff, inpatient and outpatient care teams are performing admirably.

Dr. Jonathan Friedberg, Director of Wilmot Cancer Institute, expressed pride in the team's accomplishments during the NCI designation process. He noted that Wilmot has improved and strengthened during the process, becoming a better, stronger, and smarter cancer center.

Wilmot is the only new cancer center vying for designation this year. The University leadership has provided full support for Wilmot Cancer Institute's efforts towards NCI designation. Research faculty, trainees, and staff are continuing their investigations, writing new grants, and exploring new collaborations.

The final decision from the NCI on whether Wilmot will become the 72nd designated center in the U.S. is expected by early summer. Being designated by the NCI as one of the country's elite centers is an extraordinary honor that opens doors to many opportunities in research and patient care.

Meanwhile, community outreach faculty and staff are planning new events for 2022, further demonstrating Wilmot's commitment to its mission. The identity of the leader who is especially proud of achieving the NCI designation goal remains unnamed in the search results.

The virtual site review was the last step in a more than 5-year process to build the case for NCI Designation. As the community waits for the decision, the Wilmot team remains hopeful and optimistic about the future.
