Cancer Institute at Wilmot Achieves Last Step in NCI Accreditation Procedure
The Wilmot Cancer Institute in the United States is on the brink of becoming the 72nd designated Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). After a rigorous more than 5-year process, the institute has transformed and improved its footprint to meet strict NCI standards.
The transformation has seen a more robust Community Outreach and Engagement office, a stronger cancer research training program, and enhanced administration and overall organizational capabilities. This revitalization has positioned Wilmot as the only new cancer center vying for designation this year, and it is the only new center to have gone through the process completely virtually.
Thirty Wilmot team members, including the executive committee, research program and shared resource leaders, assistant directors, and the administrative team, participated in a virtual site visit for NCI designation. The team spent six hours with 15 virtual reviewers from the National Cancer Institute, answering dozens of detailed questions on various aspects of Wilmot, such as institutional commitment to cancer, focus, and transdisciplinary collaboration.
Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the community outreach faculty and staff are planning new events for 2022, while regional faculty and staff, as well as inpatient and outpatient care teams, are performing admirably. Research faculty, trainees, and staff are continuing their investigations, writing new grants, and exploring new collaborations.
The Wilmot leaders relied on clinicians, nurses, and coordinators to enroll more patients in clinical trials, an essential requirement for NCI designation. University leadership provided full support for the Wilmot Cancer Institute's NCI designation process.
A final decision from the NCI on whether Wilmot will become the 72nd designated center in the U.S. is expected by early summer. Being designated by the NCI as one of the country's elite centers is an extraordinary honor that offers opportunities in research and patient care.
Dr. Jonathan Friedberg, M.D., Director of Wilmot Cancer Institute, expresses pride in the team's accomplishments during the NCI designation process. "We have worked tirelessly to ensure that our institute meets the highest standards of cancer care and research," he said. "We are confident that our dedication and hard work will be recognized by the NCI."
As the decision date approaches, the Wilmot Cancer Institute team remains hopeful and eager for the opportunity to join the ranks of the nation's elite cancer centers.
