Cancer Institute at Wilmot Secures Final Step in NCI Designation Procedure
The Wilmot Cancer Institute, based in the heart of the community, has been on a five-year journey towards a significant milestone - the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation. This prestigious honour, which opens opportunities in research and patient care, is eagerly anticipated by the institute's leadership, staff, and the wider community.
University leadership has provided unwavering support for the Wilmot Cancer Institute's NCI designation process. The institute's aim is to showcase its energy, operational soundness, and worthiness during the upcoming site visit.
The journey to NCI designation has been a collaborative effort, with clinicians, nurses, and coordinators working tirelessly to enroll more patients in clinical trials, a crucial requirement for the designation. The institute is the only new cancer center to have gone through the entire process virtually, a testament to its adaptability and resilience.
Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, regional faculty and staff, as well as inpatient and outpatient care teams, have performed admirably. The virtual site visit, which involved 15 reviewers and 30 Wilmot team members, was completed successfully.
The Wilmot Cancer Institute has undergone transformative changes to meet the strict NCI standards. Improvements have been made in community outreach, research training, administration, and organizational capabilities. The institute has become a better, stronger, and smarter cancer center due to this process, according to its Director, Dr. Jonathan Friedberg, M.D.
Dr. Friedberg expresses pride in the team's accomplishments during the NCI designation process and asserts that they have answered dozens of detailed questions on various aspects of their institute. The community outreach faculty and staff are already planning new events for 2022, further strengthening the institute's ties with the community.
A final decision from the NCI on whether Wilmot will become a designated center is expected by early summer. The Q&A with Dr. Friedberg about the Wilmot Cancer Institute's journey to NCI designation is available in the latest issue of Dialogue.
The Wilmot Cancer Institute is the only new cancer center vying for designation this year, making this a historic moment for the institute and the wider community it serves. The entire team at Wilmot Cancer Institute is eagerly awaiting the NCI's decision and looks forward to continuing its mission of providing world-class cancer care and research.
