In a sad turn of events, K-9 Archer, a valued member of the Hawaii Police Department, passed away on Thursday. The 6-year-old Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix from Hungary had been serving with the department since 2020, working alongside his handler in multiple operations to keep drugs and dangerous contraband off the streets.

Hawaii Police Interim Chief Reed Mahuna has promised a thorough criminal and administrative investigation into the circumstances surrounding K-9 Archer's death. According to Chief Mahuna, the death was a preventable tragedy, and he has expressed a commitment to accountability to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.

The investigation was prompted by the discovery that K-9 Archer was left unattended in a police vehicle in West Hawaii for an unacceptable amount of time. Chief Mahuna has stated that dogs should never be left in a hot car, and leaving a car in the shade with water for the dog, or with the windows partially down, will not prevent the dog from overheating.

Chief Mahuna also expressed his condolences to K-9 Archer's handler, who is devastated by his loss. K-9 Archer was considered a partner and protector by his handler and the police department, and his passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill.

K-9 Archer was trained in narcotics detection and had been a vital asset to the department. His contributions to keeping the streets of Hawaii safe will not be forgotten.

In light of this tragedy, Chief Mahuna has reminded the public that dogs should never be left unattended in a vehicle for any period of time. He hopes that K-9 Archer's death will serve as a reminder to everyone about the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars.

The Hawaii Police Department is currently investigating the death of K-9 Archer, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
