In a significant step towards a low-carbon future, British Petroleum (BP), Everllence, and NEP have joined forces to deliver two groundbreaking projects in north-east England. These initiatives further demonstrate BP's focused and value-driven strategy for hydrogen and carbon capture & storage (CCS), executed in partnership while maintaining a disciplined capital-light model.

German company Everllence will supply carbon dioxide compression systems for NZT Power and NEP in the region. The systems, which include lubrication and control systems, process-specific auxiliary equipment, two integrally geared compressors (type RG) for low-pressure wet CO2 boosting, and three radial barrel compressors (type RB) for high-pressure dry CO2 processing for offshore transmission, can compress over 370,000kg of CO2 per hour in total.

NZT Power, a joint venture between BP and Equinor, will generate over 740MW of dispatchable low-carbon electricity. Planned to be the UK's first commercial-scale gas-fired power plant with integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS), NZT Power will contribute significantly to the East Coast Cluster. NEP, a joint venture between BP, Equinor, and TotalEnergies, will provide the transportation and storage backbone for the East Coast Cluster, eventually being able to transport and store up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually from the Tees Valley region, combined with emissions from additional industrial sources.

Felipe Arbelaez, BP's Senior Vice-President of hydrogen and CCS, expressed his delight at the progress of both projects, stating that they demonstrate the power of the private and public sectors coming together to deliver integrated low carbon energy projects. Dr Marco Ernst, Head of Segment CCUS at Everllence, mentioned that the company's compressor portfolio is designed to meet the full range of process conditions in CO2 service.

Dr Uwe Lauber, CEO of Everllence, added that the set-up would deliver proof of how flexible gas-fired plants could become part of a Net Zero energy system using carbon capture. He emphasised that these projects will create value for the region, partners, customers, and BP.

The financial support for the NZT Power and Northern Endurance Partnership projects in North-east England is provided by the UK government and partners including industry and research institutions. The progress of these projects underscores the commitment of BP, Everllence, and NEP to a sustainable future, demonstrating that collaborative efforts can drive significant advancements in carbon capture and storage technology.
