Cassava Technologies Announces Africa's First AI Factory

Strive Masiyiwa, the president and group chief executive of Cassava Technologies, has announced a significant new initiative: Africa's first AI factory. This data center, built in collaboration with NVIDIA, is dedicated to AI development and aims to serve university researchers, startups, and developers across various sectors such as health, fintech, and government.

Masiyiwa's vision for the AI factory is rooted in his belief that Africa must not be left behind in the global AI revolution. His company, Cassava Technologies, has a history of investing in critical infrastructure, including fiber networks, data centers, renewable energy, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

The initial phase of the AI factory will see the deployment of 3,000 GPUs at data centers in South Africa. This move comes in response to strong demand for GPU capacity from African companies and entrepreneurs, according to Masiyiwa. The initial capacity of the AI factory has already been pre-ordered by African businesses.

The $720 million investment by Cassava Technologies is a bold step towards fostering innovation and ensuring Africa's participation in the global AI revolution. The AI factory's expansion plans include Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and Morocco over the next four years.

Strive Masiyiwa's leadership has been a significant factor in the success of this project. His belief in the transformative potential of AI for Africa sees it as an opportunity for innovation and economic growth on the continent. He expects to see new AI applications across various industries like health services, education, gaming, cryptocurrencies, fintech, and agritech.

The AI factory will offer GPU renting opportunities and could pave the way for groundbreaking advancements. This project could help position Africa as a key player in the future of AI technology. In 2024, Cassava Technologies raised $90 million in funding, with Google as one of its key investors, to connect Africa and Australia via a subsea fiber-optic cable.

This strategic collaboration with NVIDIA Corp., a global leader in graphics processing units (GPUs), could mark a turning point in Africa's AI landscape. The AI factory aims to provide opportunities for university researchers, startups, and developers across various sectors, ensuring that Africa remains at the forefront of technological innovation.
