Casualties rise as Russian air strikes claim lives of at least twenty civilians
In the small town of Jarowa, located north of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, a brutal attack has claimed the lives of at least 20 civilians. The bombing, carried out by Russian forces, targeted a gathering of people awaiting pension payments, resulting in significant civilian casualties.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as brutal, posting about it on various platforms and calling for a sharp reaction from the international community. The victims, reportedly, were civilians waiting in line to receive their pensions. Rescue teams are still on the scene in Jarowa, and residents are being urged to evacuate to safer regions.
The military governor of the region, Vadym Fillaschkin, reported 21 dead and an equal number of injured. No uniformed personnel were among the victims shown in a video published by Zelenskyy.
The attack comes as Russia continues its assault on Ukraine, which has been ongoing for more than three and a half years. Moscow justifies its war with the protection of the population living in the territories it demands from Ukraine. However, despite ongoing mediation efforts since March, a peaceful solution to the Ukraine war remains bleak.
Putin has rejected demands for an unconditional ceasefire, and a meeting with Zelenskyy to end the war was linked to demands from Moscow, including the abandonment of NATO membership and the surrender of several territories, including the Donetsk region.
In a move that could escalate tensions further, Zelenskyy explicitly called on the USA to impose tougher sanctions against Russia. US President Donald Trump sees himself as a mediator in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, unlike his predecessor Joe Biden.
However, Ukraine has few defense means against the aerial bombs dropped by Russian jets close to the front line in their own airspace. Its air force has too few planes to risk air combat.
As the conflict continues, the international community is urged to take decisive action to protect civilians and bring an end to the violence in Ukraine.
