Cataclysmic rains cause urban flooding in Islamabad and Rawalpindi
In Pakistan, several regions have been hit by heavy rains and strong winds, according to the Met Office forecasts. Kashmir, Murree, Abbottabad, and Mansehra are expected to see showers, while Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Bagh, and Haveli may experience heavy rain and strong winds.
The cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been particularly affected, with torrential rains lashing both cities on Monday. The heavy downpour turned several neighbourhoods in Islamabad into waterlogged zones, and streets in G-11 were submerged, leaving cars stuck due to flooding. Storm drains across the cities are overflowing, and authorities are advising residents to avoid storm drains and cooperate with them to minimize risks.
The devastation from the Punjab floods now threatens Pakistan's economy, as thousands of villages and farms have been washed away. The water level in Nullah Leh at Katarian has risen to 15.7 feet, close to the danger mark. In Rawalpindi, rainfall measured 25mm in Shamsabad, 35mm in Pirwadhai, 60mm in New Katarian, and 5mm in Chaklala and Gawalmandi.
The authorities primarily responsible for the evacuation of flood-affected people and preparation for further rains in Islamabad and Rawalpindi are the local authorities and the Pakistan disaster management agencies. Affected residents are advised to follow instructions from these local authorities and the disaster protection agencies. The Pakistani disaster management authorities and local security forces are emphasized as key players in these efforts.
Officials are warning of more rain in the coming days in several regions. Evacuation operations are underway in low-lying areas around Katarian and Gawalmandi. In the Punjab region, authorities have breached dykes to divert rising waters. The floods in Punjab have resulted in the death of 30 people, and several roads in Islamabad and Rawalpindi were flooded, with dozens of vehicles stranded.
The authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimize risks. As the flood situation continues to evolve, the focus remains on the safety and well-being of the affected populations, as well as the protection of Pakistan's economy from further damage.
