Catastrophic landslide levels Sudanese village, resulting in over 1,000 fatalities.

In the heart of Sudan's Darfur region, a tragic event unfolded this Sunday as the village of Tarasin was hit by a massive and devastating landslide. The remote mountain community, located within the rugged volcanic range of Jebel Marra, has been left in ruins, with only one survivor reported.

The disaster occurred during Sudan's rainy season, a period when mountain roads often become impassable due to heavy rainfall. The African Union has urged Sudan to "silence the guns" and allow aid delivery to the victims of the landslide, as infrastructure in Darfur remains fragile due to over two years of fighting.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM) faction, which controls the area, made a statement about the disaster. They described the landslide as a catastrophic event, appealing to the United Nations and other aid organizations for help in recovering the dead. The name of the SLM leader responsible for the disaster is not publicly specified.

The Transitional Sovereignty Council, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, mourned the victims of the landslide and pledged to mobilize resources. Burhan's forces retook central Sudan earlier this year, leaving the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in control of most of Darfur and parts of Kordofan in the south. This week, RSF commander Dagalo was sworn in as head of its newly-formed presidential council, while Mohamed Hassan Al-Taayshi was sworn in as prime minister. The RSF has set up a rival government in the territories it still controls.

Despite the ongoing political turmoil, Al-Taayshi expressed deep sorrow and emphasized the importance of human life over politics. He directly spoke with SLM leader Nur to assess needs on the ground. The rival government based in Nyala also expressed condolences and called for solidarity.

As the international community rallies to support the affected area, it is crucial to remember the human cost of this disaster. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have lost their lives in this tragic event.
