Pope Leo XIV's Dissertation on Augustinian Authority and Obedience to be Published

In October, the Catholic University of America Press will publish a significant work titled "The Office and Authority of the Local Prior in the Order of St. Augustine," by Pope Leo XIV (formerly Father Robert Prevost). The dissertation, which was presented five years after his 1982 priestly ordination, offers insights on Church authority, the spiritual life following the way of St. Augustine, and the mission of the priesthood.

The future Pope's dissertation emphasizes that Augustine's concept of authority and obedience in religious life was meant to aid the community in its striving to live a life of perfect charity. He describes authority as relational, highlighting the importance of balancing leadership with communal listening. The work also underscores the common good of the Church, the Eucharistic liturgy at the center of the community's life, the role of hierarchy and consultation, and mutual respect for the diverse contributions of each person.

Religious life, according to Pope Leo XIV, is a reality made up of visible, concrete dimensions, and spiritual, charismatic elements. He notes that the Provincial should consult with the local community before appointing the Prior, although not exclusively. Great care should be taken in the nominating of a local Prior, with the primary responsibility falling upon the Prior Provincial and his Council.

The dissertation further stresses that appointing a man to the office of Prior without a good relationship with the community would be useless. Pope Leo XIV also emphasizes the law's immensely important role in aiding the community, or in this case the local Prior, in living out the charismatic dimension of the religious life.

The current rector of the Angelicum, Dominican theologian Father Thomas Joseph White, will write a forward for the published text. The university has obtained the exclusive English-language rights for the work, and it will be made available in print and Kindle editions. The dissertation was published by Pascual García Casanova, and it will be made available by The Catholic University of America Press in Washington in 2024.

This publication marks a significant contribution to the understanding of Augustinian principles and their application in contemporary religious life. It serves as a testament to Pope Leo XIV's deep understanding of St. Augustine's teachings and their relevance in guiding the Church today.
