Cattle Ranching in Kalkar-Wissel features firefighters doubling as cowboys and midwives
Cattle Escape and Successful Birth: A Collaborative Effort in Kalkar-Wissel
On the evening of September 1st, an unexpected event unfolded in the picturesque town of Kalkar-Wissel. A herd of 18 cattle managed to escape from their pasture, leading to an exciting and successful operation to round them up.
The escape was likely due to the allure of lush grass on the other side of the fence. The farmer, finding himself in a tricky situation, had to call for backup. The volunteer fire department from the Wissel fire station, along with a local hunter, answered the call.
The hunter, named Uwe Kalkhoven, played a crucial role in the operation. He provided an infrared camera drone to track the animals, aiding the fire department in locating the escaped cattle. The drone, equipped with thermal imaging, proved to be a valuable asset in the dark.
The operation, which started at 21:23, was concluded at 23:56, lasting approximately 2.5 hours. During this time, a total of 22 emergency services personnel from the Wissel fire station worked tirelessly to ensure the safe return of the cattle.
In a twist of events, a calf was born to one of the escaped cattle during the operation. Despite the added challenge, the mother cow and the newborn calf are both reported to be doing well. The farmer, relieved and grateful, was able to return the cows to their pasture after the operation.
The incident concluded successfully, marking a day of collaboration and problem-solving in Kalkar-Wissel. No injuries were reported during the operation or the birth of the calf, making it a day to remember for all involved.
