Celebrating Coca with a mix of traditional and innovative rhythms: 28 bars take part in Coca festivities
Denia, a charming town on the North Costa Blanca, is once again at the centre of European news with the ongoing Coca Festival. This event, held from September 1 to October 2, 2023, is a tribute to one of Denia's most traditional products and a significant part of the city's identity - the coca.
The Coca Festival offers a unique experience for both locals and visitors, showcasing the richness of Denia's local cuisine. With 28 bars and restaurants participating, the event features 55 different recipes of cocas, ranging from classic versions like tomacat and anchovy to creative adaptations incorporating ingredients such as oxtail, foie, octopus, mango, guacamole, figatell, squid, and curry.
One of the festival's highlights is the guacamole-filled coca, a modern twist on traditional culinary traditions, though the creator remains unspecified. El Marino Port presents a cochinita pibil version, while L'Ànfora offers a combination of guacamole, prawn, and cod. Bodega del Puerto serves a foie with quince coca, and No ni Poc offers a Galician-style octopus coca.
The festival is designed to highlight the versatility of the local specialty, the coca, and provides gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan alternatives to cater to all dietary preferences. For those seeking refreshments, drink options include beer, wine, vermouth, or water.
The Coca Festival continues Denia's dedication to celebrating its culinary heritage. It showcases the event's commitment to preserving and promoting traditional dishes while adapting them to modern tastes. The festival is held along Calle Loreto and the port, featuring some popular establishments.
Visitors can enjoy a coca with a drink for €6.90 during the specified opening hours of each establishment. Whether you're a food enthusiast or simply looking for a unique cultural experience, the Coca Festival in Denia is not to be missed.
