Celebrating three decades of shaping human potential, the collaboration between Toyota and Jinbei's Technical Academy continues to foster individuals.
In the heart of Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning Province, a unique partnership between Toyota and Shenyang Jinbei Automotive Co., Ltd. has been shaping the future of the automotive industry for over three decades.
Established in 1990, the Liaoning Toyota Jinbei Technician Institute was a joint venture aimed at nurturing skilled talents from China's population. This technical academy, a beacon of Toyota's founding philosophy, "manufacturing is about making people," has grown from a modest intake of 100 students a year to over 4,000 students, with more than 35,000 alumni.
Akio Toyoda, then the head of the China region group, expressed a vision to create a relationship where both parties could express mutual appreciation, with people always at the centre of Toyota's car-making. This vision is reflected in the institute's graduates, who are now supporting China's manufacturing sector, predominantly in the automotive industry.
The institute's mission was to help develop skilled talents, serving as a means to support the automotive industry in a place where Toyota didn't have its own finished vehicle plant. Instead, Toyota employed a method called "knock-down production," where local manufacturers assembled vehicles using parts and components shipped from Japan.
Toyota's original intention in its first business ventures in China was to support the development of talent, people who could make automobiles. This commitment to education and skill development is evident in the success of the "Haise," a Jinbei-brand version of Toyota's Hiace, born as a result of Toyota providing technical support for commercial vehicle production in November 1988. The "Haise" gained popularity as a microbus due to its high quality and performance, helping Jinbei become the largest manufacturer in its class, supporting the people and transportation needed in a rapidly developing China.
As the automobile market in China grew, so did Toyota's presence. In the early years of cooperation with Shenyang Jinbei Automotive Co., Ltd., Toyota supported the development of the market by forming a joint venture that included technology sharing and production of models like the Toyota HiAce, adapted and produced locally. This partnership not only expanded Toyota's presence but also its technology in China.
Akio Toyoda, the current President of Toyota, continues to uphold his predecessor's values. His goal is for people to say, "It's good to have Toyota here" and "Thank you," indicating a relationship of respect and mutual appreciation. Akio Toyoda's core value is to hold Toyota to the ideal of never forgetting the original intentions, a value Toyota has cherished since its founding. This commitment to education, skill development, and community is evident in Toyota's long-standing partnership in China.
Recently, Akio Toyoda presented his calligraphy of the phrase "不忘初心" (bú wàng chūxīn), meaning "never forget the original intentions," to the Liaoning Toyota Jinbei Technician Institute to celebrate its 30th milestone. This gesture underscores Toyota's enduring commitment to education, skill development, and the community in China.
In 2019, the volume of vehicles sold in China is now 50 times that of 1990, selling about 25.8 million units. Toyota's early investments in education and technology have undoubtedly played a significant role in this growth. As Toyota continues to grow and contribute to its community, it remains committed to its founding principles, making cars while thinking about making people in the community happy, focusing on nurturing talented people who can help achieve this goal.
