Celebration of Jewish Culture in Osnabrück Happening in September
Jewish Cultural Festival Returns to Osnabrück in September 2025
The vibrant presence and future of Jewish culture will once again be celebrated in Osnabrück, Germany, as the Jewish Community of Osnabrück hosts the Jewish Cultural Festival from September 4th to 7th, 2025. The event, which has the patronage of the city's mayor, Katharina Pötter, promises an exciting lineup of high-profile artists and performances.
Kicking off the festival will be Marina Maximilian, an internationally recognised singer, pianist, composer, and actress. She will perform at the Osnabrückhalle during the opening concert, accompanied by Mobilés, whose award-winning shadow theater has been captivating audiences for years. Maximilian, born in Ukraine and professionally trained in Israel, will perform "Tell Me Where the Flowers Are" exclusively for the first time during the festival.
Music lovers can also look forward to the performance of jazz bassist Avishai Cohen, named one of the most influential instrumentalists of the 20th century by Bassplayer Magazine. Cohen will perform at the Osnabrückhalle on September 6th, 2025, accompanied by his band The Hebrew Book. The programme will include classics and newer pieces from Cohen's over 30-year career.
The Hebrew Book's members, Itay Simhovich, Yali Stern, Yonatan Voltzok, and Yuval Drabkin, are renowned musicians in their own right, and their collaboration promises an unforgettable musical experience.
In addition to music, the festival will feature a graffiti workshop led by Benzi Brofman, a street artist and muralist from northern Israel. Brofman, who is self-taught, has created large-scale works for numerous businesses and office complexes. His workshop in Osnabrück will advocate for human rights and against discrimination.
Film enthusiasts can enjoy screenings at the Arthouse Cinema, including "Seven Blessings," a film set in Israel in the 1990s about a large Jewish-Moroccan family reuniting for a grand wedding. Other films will tell stories of Jewish history and culture. "Irena's Secret," a true story about a housekeeper who hid twelve Jewish workers during World War II, will also be screened.
Richard Schmoucler, violinist and founder of the Sirba Octet, will bring traditional Jewish Klezmer melodies from Southeast Europe to life with his unique ensemble. The Sirba Octet will perform at the Osnabrückhalle on September 7th, 2025.
Leon de Winter, a renowned Dutch author, will also be a part of the festival, reading from his new novel "City of Dogs" at the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus.
Avi Toubiana, the artistic director of the Jewish Cultural Days, expresses his excitement about the new venue and the cultural interest of the Osnabrück area. Early bird tickets for the highlights will be available until May 20th. Further information and tickets for the festival will be available from May 6th at www.jewish-cultural-festival.de.
Mobilés brings the Jewish story to life in impressive images through their unique shadow theater, while Benzi Brofman's graffiti workshop aims to promote a message of inclusivity and understanding. The Jewish Cultural Festival in Osnabrück promises to be a memorable event that celebrates the richness and diversity of Jewish culture.
