CERN Physicist Furkan Dolek to Receive Legal Support from Turkish NGO Based in the U.S.
In a surprising turn of events, Turkish CERN physicist Furkan Dolek is currently being held at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement center near the Canadian border.
For four months, Dolek lived in the U.S. without valid documentation, sparking concern and curiosity among the academic and Turkish communities. His sudden disappearance from social media on August 27 further fueled speculation about his whereabouts.
Dolek's social media posts, which previously drew widespread attention, had shed light on his research and safety concerns at Fermilab, where he was employed. However, following safety concerns he raised, Dolek was dismissed from his position at Fermilab in April 2024, and his research visa was subsequently revoked.
In a bid to challenge the visa cancellation, Dolek filed a lawsuit, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
In a show of solidarity, the Turkish-American National Steering Committee (TASC) has announced they will provide legal support to Furkan Dolek. The TASC intends to continue pressing for the case to proceed in a fair, transparent, and timely manner.
The Türkiye's Consulate General in New York confirmed Dolek's location at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility following inquiries. The TASC has appointed three lawyers to closely monitor the case and provide legal assistance to Dolek. These lawyers will coordinate directly with U.S. authorities and report developments to Dolek's family.
The TASC also plans to maintain communication with relevant institutions and make necessary interventions when procedural concerns arise.
This development has sparked a wave of concern and support from the Turkish Diaspora in the USA, who are closely following the legal proceedings of this high-profile case.
