Cessation of Manufacturing for the Giant Swedish Trucks
Volvo's V90, a staple in the automotive industry for nearly three decades, is set to end production in 2025, marking the end of the second era of this iconic wagon model.
The V90, which was revived in 2016, based on the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, has been a popular choice in countries such as Germany and Sweden. However, in Germany, ordering a new V90 is no longer possible, while in Sweden, orders are still being accepted for a limited time.
The V90 was positioned in the upper midsize to luxury class, competing with wagons like the Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5 Series Touring, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate. In its first iteration, the V90 marked the end of the classic rear-wheel-drive Volvo wagons.
Volvo's engine lineup for the new V90 consisted primarily of four-cylinder engines, with options for gasoline, diesel, and mild-hybrid variants. Plug-in hybrids (T6 and T8 Twin Engine) were added to the V90's range in 2016, offering an all-electric range of around 40 to 50 kilometers.
The V90's popularity in countries like Sweden and Germany can be attributed to its stylish design and competitive positioning. However, the model has experienced reduced demand in various markets in recent years. This decline could be influenced by the SUV boom and Volvo's shift towards becoming an electric brand.
Volvo's manager responsible for the decision to discontinue production of the Volvo V90 was Håkan Samuelsson. The future of the V60 model may be influenced by electrification and the SUV boom. In the meantime, Volvo has introduced a fully electric ES90 model, expected to hit the market this fall.
As a farewell gesture, special edition models of the V90, such as the "Executive Edition," are being released. Dealer inventory for the V90 is still available, but supplies are limited. Production of the V90 will end in 2025, marking the end of the second era of the model.
The V90, which first introduced in late 1996, has represented an important part of Volvo's model range for nearly three decades, spanning two very different generations. The V90, once considered a stylish travel companion, will be missed by many.
