Challenges facing the U.S. during Trump's presidency deemed insurmountable
Iran and the United States have yet to make significant progress in resuming nuclear negotiations, with tensions escalating following a series of attacks on Iranian nuclear sites by Israel and the US in mid-2025. This escalation has led to Iran's suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), although talks were resumed in August 2025.
The West, led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, demands that Iran complies with nuclear limits and transparency. Khamenei, who maintains a firm stance, has expressed that the issues with former President Donald Trump are insurmountable and the demands are about obedience and surrender.
Observers believe that Khamenei is not fundamentally against negotiations, but he was adamant about not engaging under Trump's conditions. Western powers triggered a UN sanctions snapback in August 2025 due to Iran's nuclear violations, further complicating negotiations.
There are fears of another military strike by Israel if nuclear talks are not resumed, and if negotiations do not take place, Iran faces potential sanctions that could worsen its already struggling economic situation. The Iranian government is grappling with energy and water shortages, which could lead to internal unrest.
Khamenei's stance on resuming nuclear talks with the U.S. remains uncertain. He has accused Trump of inciting Israel and supporting its attacks on Iran to force a political change. Khamenei, who has made rare public appearances since Israel's attacks on strategic targets in Iran, has ruled out a political agreement with the U.S. under Trump's presidency.
Meanwhile, reformers in Iran, including President Massoud Peschkani, do not rule out continuing talks with the U.S. However, hardliners in Iran's parliament are strictly against resuming nuclear talks with the U.S. Speculations suggest that Khamenei was hiding due to fear of an Israeli assassination attempt.
Despite significant damage or destruction of many parts of the country, including crucial nuclear and military facilities, by Israeli forces during the June war, Khamenei and the Iranian government claim to have won the war. This assertion, however, is met with scepticism by many observers.
As the situation continues to evolve, the door for diplomatic solutions remains open, but the path to a resolution remains fraught with challenges. The international community will continue to watch closely as the situation unfolds.
