Champions League Draw Disrupted: Less Favored Teams Cause Stir from Cyprus to Kazakhstan
In the upcoming Champions League season, several newcomers are set to make their mark on the international stage. Among them are Bodø/Glimt from Norway, Pafos FC from Cyprus, Union Saint-Gilloise from Belgium, and FC Kairat Almaty from Kazakhstan.
Bodø/Glimt, who started in Norway's second division just eight years ago, are now preparing to host football giants like Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Juventus. Their meteoric rise through the ranks saw them first reach the Conference League, then the Europa League, and now the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Pafos FC and Union Saint-Gilloise are also making their Champions League debuts this season. Although their specific journeys to the competition are not detailed here, both teams are drawing top-tier teams at home. Pafos will host Bayern Munich in Cyprus and face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while Union Saint-Gilloise will play at Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena, host Inter Milan, and welcome Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid to their home ground.
Union Saint-Gilloise will also travel to Atletico Madrid's Metropolitano and face Inter Milan at home. Interestingly, Pafos FC will also face Kairat Almaty, another Champions League debutant.
The story of FC Kairat Almaty's qualification for the Champions League is particularly noteworthy. A 21-year-old goalkeeper, Temirlan Anarbekov, saved three penalties in a shootout against Celtic, securing their place in the competition. Real Madrid will have to travel over 12 hours to play a football match in Kazakhstan, and FC Kairat themselves face nearly 7,000km trips to Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal.
This season's Champions League promises to be an exciting one, with these newcomers adding a fresh dynamic to the competition. As they face off against established teams, it will be interesting to see how they fare and whether they can make a lasting impression on the international stage.
