Championship final in Riga's European basketball tournament is toughened up: athletes endure following a challenging game
Germany Overcomes Tough Challenge to Advance in EuroBasket 2025
In a hard-fought game, Germany secured their place in the quarterfinals of EuroBasket 2025 with an 85-58 victory over Portugal. The victory came after a challenging three quarters for the World Cup winners, who found themselves behind at halftime (31:32) for the first time in the tournament.
Alex Mumbru, the national coach, returned to the sidelines for the first time during the EM after missing the group stage due to illness. Mumbru, who had previously suffered an "acute abdomen" and was hospitalized in Tampere, appeared recovered and drew tactics before the game. Despite sitting more often than usual during the match, he gave instructions to the team.
Germany started sloppily and was down 2:7 at the beginning of the game. However, they turned the game around by the end of the first quarter (17:12), albeit without the form they displayed in Tampere. The team's superior quality shone through in the end, securing the victory.
Captain Dennis Schröder, who was one of the top scorers with 16 points, issued a brief announcement to the German basketball team after their victory. He highlighted the team's depth, stating that everyone who played contributed to the win.
Germany struggled to find a rhythm from three-point range in the first half, making only one of 18 three-point attempts. Maodo Lo sank the second German three-pointer in the final minutes of the third quarter, providing a much-needed boost for the team.
Coach Alan Ibrahimagic also saw a difficult game against Portugal. He shared coaching responsibilities with Mumbru, and Ibrahimagic noted that missed good shots led to nervousness and tension during halftime. Despite these challenges, the team managed to regroup and secure a comfortable victory.
In the quarterfinals, Germany will face either Italy or Slovenia, featuring NBA superstar Luka Doncic. The team will look to build on their victory against Portugal and continue their run in EuroBasket 2025.
