Chan 2024 Hailed a Success According to Infantino and Motsepe
Chan 2024 Tournament Hails as Most Successful in History
The African Nations Championship (Chan) 2024 tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, has concluded with the national teams of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania performing above expectations, attracting worldwide attention.
Despite Harambee Stars, Uganda Cranes, and Taifa Stars defying odds in their respective groups, they fell short at the quarter-final stage. The tournament, however, was hailed as the most successful in the 15-year history of Chan by CAF's President Patrice Motsepe.
Motsepe's praise for the successful organization of the tournament was not limited to its success. He also thanked President William Ruto for his role in upgrading the facilities.
The partnership agreement for financing African football, mentioned by Motsepe, was signed with FIFA. He revealed that CAF is working to build a partnership with more corporates to inject more financing into African football, although he did not confirm this in the post-tournament press conference.
Fifa President Gianni Infantino, in his second term, stated that Fifa is making a significant investment in African football, with a focus on increasing the number of African nations participating in the 2026 Fifa World Cup. A significant amount of the new financing will go into youth competitions and investment in academies to encourage young boys to participate in high-level competitions.
Infantino mentioned that part of the investment includes funding for youth academies and revenues. He expressed his joy at being in Kenya and the region, and emphasized the importance of football for young girls and boys.
The Chan 2024 tournament was intended as a rehearsal for the 2027 African Cup of Nations (Afcon), which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Fans have shown strong support for the Chan 2024 tournament, with large turnouts, especially at Kasarani Stadium and Nyayo Stadium.
While some stadiums had low attendance, particularly in Zanzibar, CAF's President Patrice Motsepe refuted claims of overall low turnouts. Nyayo Stadium saw more than 20,000 fans attend games in Group A.
Infantino, in his statement, claimed that these investments will result in improved representation of African teams in major tournaments like the World Cup. Motsepe acknowledged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and their Tanzanian and Ugandan counterparts for their collaboration in realizing the common goal of uniting East Africa through football.
Despite the tournament's conclusion, the spirit of unity and collaboration continues to resonate across East Africa, setting a promising stage for the upcoming 2027 Afcon.
