Change in leadership: Digital and Product Officer position assumed by Target's new head
Target, the popular American retail company, has announced the appointment of Prat Vemana as its Chief Digital and Product Officer, effective from October 31. Vemana, who previously served as the vice president of online at The Home Depot, will be responsible for leading Target's digital teams, including site merchandising, user experience, digital operations, product, and Target+.
Vemana brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having worked extensively in the retail industry. Before joining Target, he served as the senior vice president and chief digital officer at Kaiser Permanente, where he led the enterprise product management and experience teams. Prior to that, he worked at The Home Depot, where he rose through the ranks to become the company's chief product and experience officer. He also spent time at Staples, where he was the director of the Velocity Lab and mobile strategy.
Target is making a significant push into the digital channel, and Vemana's appointment comes at a crucial time. The retail industry is tapping into shopper data as consumer data becomes more readily available, opening up new opportunities for personalizing the shopper experience. Digital currently represents 20% of Target's business and is expected to continue growing.
In the second quarter of 2019, digital fulfillment accounted for just over 7% of Target's total sales. However, the digital growth for Target is currently led by its same-day services. In 2020, Target's same-day services (Pick Up, Drive Up, and Shipt) grew 273% in its second quarter. In the same quarter of 2020, digital sales were more than 10% of sales.
Target is attempting to rightsize inventory in the face of decreasing demand as consumers pull back on discretionary spending. The company's second quarter earnings in August 2021 fell short of estimates, with operating income down 87% year over year. Despite these challenges, Target continues to show no signs of slowing down in the digital arena.
Vemana will report to Target's Chief Guest Experience Officer, Cara Sylvester. In his new role, he will be responsible for leading Target's site merchandising, user experience, digital operations, product, and Target+. With his extensive experience in the retail industry and his focus on digital transformation and innovation, Vemana is well-positioned to help Target continue its digital growth.
In his LinkedIn profile, Vemana is listed as Staples' vice president of global e-commerce, product, and analytics. He has also gained expertise in applying generative AI to enterprise software and enhancing product and digital strategies. Vemana's appointment is a strong indication of Target's commitment to digital growth and innovation in the retail industry.
